VR and AI are not the same thing, but they buy the same hardware
Virtual reality is a rendering problem. Local AI is a memory problem. They have almost nothing in common as technologies, and yet they send you to the same shelf, because both break an ordinary gaming build in the same place: the graphics card.
VR asks for sustained framerate. A headset running 90Hz per eye is drawing two images rather than one, and a frame that arrives late is not a stutter you shrug at, it is nausea. That is why a card comfortable at 1440p can still struggle in VR, and why headroom matters more here than a benchmark average suggests.
Local AI asks for capacity instead. Video memory is a hard wall: a model either fits in VRAM or it does not, and when it does not, performance does not degrade gently, it collapses. That is why 16GB is the number that matters on this page, and why a 32GB card sits at the top of it despite costing more than most complete gaming PCs.

What actually matters when buying for VR or AI
Video memory, first and last. For AI it is the only spec that decides whether something runs. For VR it decides how long the card stays useful as headset resolution climbs. Everything on this page except the standalone headsets carries at least 16GB, and that is deliberate.

VR titles are not small. A handful of the bigger ones will take a meaningful bite out of 128GB, and uninstalling to make room is exactly the friction that makes a headset gather dust on a shelf. If you already know you are the sort of person who keeps twenty things installed, pay the hundred.

This is the entry point to everything this page is about, and it carries the highest rating of any product here at 4.8 stars. Sixteen gigabytes of video memory is the line where local AI stops being a toy: below it you are restricted to small quantised models, and above it a great many of the useful open models fit without contortions.
For VR the argument is different but points the same way. The 5070 Ti has the headroom to hold a stable frame at headset refresh rates, which is the thing that separates a comfortable session from a queasy one. It is the cheapest card here that we would put behind a headset without qualifying the recommendation.
The catch is honest and it is about the future rather than the present. Sixteen gigabytes is comfortable today. What you are buying is not capacity but speed: more of everything that turns those sixteen gigabytes into finished frames and finished tokens. In VR that is the difference between hitting refresh comfortably and hitting it exactly.
It also carries the largest review count of any graphics card on this page at 303, which matters more than the gap between 4.6 and 4.7 elsewhere in the lineup. Depth of evidence beats a decimal place.
Whether the four hundred and thirty dollars is worth it depends entirely on what you are driving. On a mid-range headset or a 1440p screen it is money you will not see. On a high-resolution headset, or if you are running models rather than just chatting with them, you will.

The reason it earns a place is that ASUS PRIME cards have a long reputation for running quietly under sustained load, and sustained load is exactly what both of this page subjects produce. A VR session is not a benchmark run, it is an hour. An AI workload is not a burst, it is however long the job takes. A card that stays quiet through that is worth something that a spec sheet does not capture.

Five thousand dollars for a graphics card is not a gaming decision and we are not going to pretend it is. Nothing in VR needs this. No headset on sale today will use what it can do, and buying it to play games is a straightforward waste of four thousand dollars.
It is on this page for one reason: 32GB of video memory. That number moves the ceiling on what you can run locally in a way no other card here does. Models that will not load at 16GB load at 32GB, and the difference is not that they run slower below the line, it is that they do not run at all. If that sentence describes a problem you actually have, this is the card that solves it and there is no cheaper way to solve it.

How much video memory each job actually needs
This is the section that decides your purchase, so it is worth being specific rather than gesturing at bigger numbers.
For local AI, memory is a wall and not a slope
When a model fits in video memory it runs at the speed of the card. When it does not fit, it does not run slowly, it falls back to system memory and slows by an order of magnitude, or it refuses to load at all. There is no gentle middle. That single fact is why every recommendation on this page is built around capacity first and speed second.
Eight gigabytes handles small models and quantized versions of mid-size ones. It is where most people start and it is genuinely useful, but you will meet the ceiling quickly and you will meet it as a hard stop.
Sixteen gigabytes is the practical line, and it is why five of the eight products here carry exactly that. A large share of the open models people actually want to run locally fit here in quantized form. This is the number to buy if you want to experiment seriously without planning your life around video memory.
Thirty-two gigabytes is a different category of purchase. It removes the ceiling for most local work rather than raising it. It is also five thousand dollars, which is why we put it eighth on this page rather than first, and why the paragraph recommending it spends most of its time telling you who should not buy it.
For VR, the number that matters is the one that does not move
VR is less about capacity and more about consistency. A headset at 90Hz per eye needs a frame every eleven milliseconds, twice, and it needs that reliably. An average framerate is close to meaningless here; what you feel is the worst one percent.
That is why we would not put anything below the RTX 5070 Ti behind a headset without qualifying it. Not because cheaper cards cannot hit the number, but because they hit it with nothing spare, and nothing spare is where discomfort lives.

Do you need a PC for VR at all?

What we would not worry about
Brand of graphics card, within reason. The GIGABYTE and the ASUS 5080 on this page are the same chip with different coolers and an eighty-two dollar gap. Buy whichever is cheaper on the day unless you have a specific reason to care about noise.
System memory beyond 32GB, for now. Both machines here carry 32GB and that is comfortable for VR and for running models that fit in video memory. Sixty-four gigabytes helps in specific workflows and is wasted in most.
The last two hundred megahertz. Factory overclocked editions cost more and deliver a difference you will not perceive in a headset or in a model load time. Spend it on memory capacity instead, every time.
Who this page is not for
If you are buying purely to play flat-screen games, almost nothing here is the right purchase. Buy on the specification that decides your outcome, then buy on the day the price is reasonable, and those are two separate decisions that a lot of guides collapse into one.

What VR and AI actually cost beyond the hardware
The purchase price is not the whole number, and a buying guide that stops there is not being straight with you.
For VR
Games are the obvious one, and VR titles are not cheap. Beyond that, most people end up buying a better head strap within a month, because the ones included with headsets are almost universally the first thing owners replace. Budget for it rather than being surprised by it.
Space matters more than accessories. Room-scale VR wants clear floor, and the most common reason a headset gathers dust is not the hardware, it is that there is nowhere convenient to use it. That costs nothing and it decides everything.
For local AI
Storage fills quickly. Model files are large, and a 1TB drive holding Windows disappears faster than you expect once you keep a few of them around. Both machines on this page carry 2TB for that reason.

What changes when you move from gaming to VR
A machine that plays games well is not automatically a machine that drives a headset well, and the gap catches people out because it does not show up in any of the numbers they are used to reading.
The first change is that you are rendering twice. Two eyes, two images, every frame. That is not quite double the work because a lot is shared, but it is far more than the single-screen figure on any benchmark chart implies.
The second change is that the target is fixed and unforgiving. On a monitor, a frame arriving late is a stutter you notice and forget. In a headset, your inner ear notices, and what it produces is nausea rather than irritation. There is no tolerance band. A machine that averages well but dips is worse in VR than a slower machine that never dips.
The third change is that the processor matters more than gamers expect. Frame delivery has to be even, and evenness is where a strong processor earns its money.
