Seven parts, $954.15 total, and one finding that surprised us: this machine has better configured memory than our $1,793 build does. Sixteen gigabytes in dual channel for $102.97, against sixteen in single channel for $219.99. The cheaper computer wins that particular argument.

This budget gaming PC build costs $954.15 and it is built on a decision most guides at this price will not make explicitly: it uses the previous-generation AMD platform, on purpose, because DDR5 memory pricing has made the current one a bad deal at the bottom of the market.

The consequence is worth stating up front because it is genuinely strange. Our $2,000 build runs 16GB of DDR5 as a single stick, because a matched pair costs $479.99. This machine runs 16GB of DDR4 as a matched pair for $102.97. The cheaper computer has the better memory configuration, and it is not close.

Every price below was checked against Amazon on August 20, 2026. Every compatibility question is worked through rather than asserted, and the one real cost of this approach, a socket with no future, is set out plainly rather than buried.

The finding: this build has better memory than our $2,000 one

We did not set out to demonstrate this. It fell out of the pricing.

Our RAM guide found DDR4 kits at $99 to $249 and DDR5 kits at $479 to $619. That gap is large enough to change what platform makes sense, and at this budget it changes it completely.

The $2,000 build uses AM5, which accepts only DDR5. A 32GB DDR5 kit is $479.99, roughly a third of that budget, so it runs a single 16GB stick at $219.99 instead. One stick means single channel, which halves memory bandwidth and costs real frame rates. It is a compromise that build takes deliberately and explains at length.

This build uses AM4, which takes DDR4. A matched 2x8GB kit at 3200MHz is $102.97. That is dual channel, at 47 percent of the price of the single DDR5 stick, in a machine costing half as much overall.

So the cheaper computer has the better memory arrangement. That is not a clever trick, it is what happens when one memory standard is priced sensibly and the other is not, and it is the single strongest argument for building at this budget on the older platform rather than stretching to the newer one.

The real cost: this socket has no future

Here is what the DDR4 saving actually costs, stated plainly, because a budget guide that hides this is not worth reading.

AM4 is at the end of its life. The Ryzen 5000 series is the last generation it takes. There is no future chip to drop into this board in two years, so when this processor is no longer enough, you replace the motherboard, the processor and the memory together. That is effectively a new machine.

By contrast our motherboard guide found that every AM5 board supports three processor generations, and the $2,000 build was chosen partly for that. You pay more now and you upgrade cheaply later.

A necessary clarification, because our own motherboard guide calls AM4 boards a trap. They are, and the trap is specific: AM4 boards still rank highly in searches for current parts, so somebody shopping for a modern Ryzen chip can easily buy a board that physically cannot accept it. That is a real hazard and we excluded two AM4 boards from that guide for exactly this reason.

Deliberately choosing AM4 with an AM4 processor is a different thing entirely. It is a coherent budget platform with cheap memory and cheap chips, and it works perfectly well as long as you know you are buying the end of a line rather than the start of one. The trap is the mismatch, not the socket.

Where the money goes

The total is $954.15, and the proportions look different from a higher-budget build in ways that are worth understanding.

  • Graphics card: $257.22, or 27 percent. Below the 35 to 45 percent a healthy gaming build usually allocates. Not by choice.
  • Processor: $179.00, or 19 percent. Unusually high for a budget build, and the reason is below.
  • Storage: $199.99, or 21 percent. For a 1TB drive.
  • Memory: $102.97, or 11 percent.
  • Motherboard: $89.99, or 9 percent.
  • Power supply: $69.99, or 7 percent.
  • Case: $54.99, or 6 percent.

The graphics card share is the number to notice. At $2,000 the GPU takes 42 percent, which is correct. Here it takes 25, because the fixed costs of a computer, a case, a power supply, a board, a drive, do not shrink proportionally with the budget. Roughly $460 of this build is spent before the processor or the graphics card gets anything, and that floor is why the jump from $1,000 to $2,000 buys so much more than it looks like it should.

Compatibility: every part checked against every other

Processor to motherboard. The Ryzen 5 5600X is socket AM4. The MSI B550M PRO-VDH WiFi is an AM4 board listing support for Ryzen 5000 series processors. The 5600X is a 5000 series part. Match.

Motherboard to memory. B550 is a DDR4 platform. The Silicon Power kit is DDR4 3200MHz. The board has four DIMM slots and the kit uses two, in matched pairs, which is what enables dual channel. Two slots remain free.

Motherboard to storage. The Lexar drive is M.2 2280, the standard desktop length, running PCIe Gen4 x4. B550 provides M.2 support at Gen3 speeds, which the drive falls back to and which is entirely adequate for game loading, as our SSD guide explains in detail.

Motherboard to graphics card. The RTX 3050 is a dual-fan card in a standard PCIe x16 slot. It is a physically small card, which is helpful in a budget case where clearance is tighter.

Power supply to everything. A Ryzen 5 5600X and an RTX 3050 together draw well under 400W. The 750W supply here is substantial overprovisioning and it is deliberate, for the reason in its review below.

Case to motherboard. The B550M is micro ATX and the DARKROCK EC2 is a mid-tower ATX case. A smaller board fits a larger case without issue, because the mounting holes are a subset of the larger standard. The reverse is not true.

Cooling. The Ryzen 5 5600X ships with a cooler in the box that is adequate for it at stock speeds, so no separate purchase is needed. This is one of the quiet advantages of the older platform: several current chips do not include one.

6GB GDDR6, dual fan, $257.22, 4.7 stars from 1,099 ratings. This is the cheapest sensible entry point into current-generation gaming, and it carries more owner evidence than any other part in this build bar the processor.

This is a 1080p card and the guide is honest about it. Six gigabytes of video memory is enough for 1080p in current titles at sensible settings, and it is not enough for 1440p in demanding ones. Buying it while expecting 1440p performance is the mistake to avoid; buying it knowing it targets 1080p is a perfectly sound decision at this budget.

The physical size helps more than the specification sheet suggests. It is a two-slot dual-fan card, which matters in a budget case where internal clearance is tighter and airflow is less generous than in a mid-range chassis.

If your budget can stretch, this is the part to stretch on. The GIGABYTE RTX 5060 8GB at $459.99 is a meaningfully faster card, though it would push this build past $1,050 and out of the range this guide covers. The graphics card is where additional money produces the most visible return, every time.

1TB, PCIe Gen4 x4, M.2 2280, $199.99, 4.8 stars from 1,261 ratings. The second most expensive part in this build, which tells you something about current storage prices.

This is a Gen4 drive at a Gen3 price, and the speed is not the reason to buy it. Our SSD guide’s central finding was that game loading is thousands of small scattered reads rather than one long sequential one, so the headline 7,400 MB/s matters far less than the marketing implies. The practical difference between a Gen3 and a Gen4 drive when loading a game is frequently under a second. What the Lexar actually buys you at this budget is a 1,000TBW endurance rating and 1,261 owners at 4.8 stars, rather than raw sequential speed.

1TB is the honest minimum and it will feel tight. A single large modern game can occupy 150GB, so plan on roughly six installed at once alongside Windows. The board has a second M.2 slot, so adding storage later is straightforward and does not require replacing this drive.

1,261 ratings at 4.8 is the highest-rated part in this entire build, and unlike the drive it replaces it is a name our SSD guide already carries at 2TB. The 1TB is simply the capacity this budget allows.

It is a matched pair, so it runs in dual channel. Desktop memory has two channels to the processor and populating both roughly doubles the bandwidth between them. That is worth real frame rates in games, and it is the specification our $2,000 build gives up because DDR5 pricing forced it to. Here it costs $102.97 and requires no compromise at all.

3200MHz is the sweet spot for the Ryzen 5000 series. Faster DDR4 exists and produces very little additional benefit on this platform, so paying more for it is not a good use of a tight budget.

The honest limitation is the ceiling rather than the configuration. This is DDR4 on a dying socket, so it is not memory you carry forward into your next machine. Two DIMM slots remain free if you want 32GB later, which at DDR4 prices is a genuinely cheap upgrade, unlike everything else in this comparison.

Cheaper AM4 boards exist, including a GIGABYTE B550M K at around $70, and we chose to spend the extra twenty dollars here for two reasons. Built-in WiFi 6, which saves buying an adapter and is the kind of thing budget builders forget to budget for. And a thousand-plus ratings from a first-party Amazon listing, on the component whose failure is hardest to diagnose.

B550 gives you PCIe 4.0 on the graphics slot and the primary M.2, four DDR4 DIMM slots and a micro ATX footprint. For a 5600X and a 3050 it is more board than the parts require, which is the correct direction to err.

Read the socket line before you buy anything else. This is an AM4 board. It will not accept a Ryzen 7000, 8000 or 9000 processor, and no update changes that. Pair it with the 5600X in this list, or another Ryzen 5000 chip, and nothing else.

Six cores and twelve threads is a genuinely capable gaming configuration, and it is the same core count as the Ryzen 5 9600X in our $2,000 build. The 5600X is a slower generation with less cache and a lower boost clock, so it is meaningfully behind in absolute terms, but it is not a compromised part. It is a very good processor that costs what it does because its platform is old, not because it is bad.

It includes a Wraith Stealth cooler in the box, which is worth about $30 in this context and is one of the practical reasons the older platform stretches a budget further.

Where it will show its age is anything CPU-bound: streaming while you play, large simulation games, and high frame rate competitive titles where the processor rather than the graphics card sets the ceiling. For 1080p gaming paired with an RTX 3050, the graphics card is the limit long before this chip is.

750W, 80 PLUS Bronze, $59.99, 4.6 stars from 439 ratings. The part we most deliberately overspent on.

This build draws well under 400W and we specified 750W anyway. That is not an error. The graphics card is the part most likely to be upgraded in this machine, and a much faster card needs a much larger supply. Buying 750W now means that upgrade is a single component swap rather than a swap plus a full teardown to replace the power supply underneath everything else.

80 PLUS Bronze rather than Gold is the concession to budget. It is slightly less efficient, which means marginally more waste heat and a slightly higher electricity bill, and it is entirely fine. Corsair’s CX line has been the default budget recommendation for years and 439 ratings at 4.6 supports that.

It is non-modular, meaning every cable is permanently attached whether you need it or not. In a budget case with limited cable routing space that is genuinely annoying during the build, and it is the honest cost of the twenty dollars saved against a modular unit.

A case is the easiest place to save money in a build because it does nothing for performance, and it is the easiest place to save too much. This one is a full mid-tower with front USB Type-C, which is more than the price usually buys and means the micro ATX board inside has room to work in.

Budget the extra for fans. This is where a cheap case costs you: our $2,000 build’s Corsair case ships with three ARGB fans pre-installed, and this one does not match that. Two additional 120mm fans cost around $20 to $30 and are the first thing to add. With $45.85 of headroom against the $1,000 target, that is comfortably affordable and we would spend it there before anywhere else.

551 ratings at 4.4 is the weakest evidence in this build. It is adequate rather than reassuring, and a case is the component where a poor one is annoying rather than dangerous, which is why we accepted it here and would not accept the equivalent on the power supply.

What to upgrade first

1. Two case fans, about $20 to $30. The cheapest meaningful improvement and the first thing we would buy with the $45.85 of headroom. A budget case with poor airflow throttles a graphics card that would otherwise be fine.

2. The graphics card, whenever you can. This is the one upgrade that transforms the machine, and the 750W power supply was chosen specifically so it can happen without touching anything else. Moving to the GIGABYTE RTX 5060 8GB at $459.99 is the natural step.

3. A second 16GB DDR4 kit, about $100. Two DIMM slots are free. At DDR4 prices this is the cheapest 32GB upgrade available anywhere in either of our build guides.

4. A second M.2 drive, whenever 1TB runs out. Which it will.

What you cannot upgrade is the processor, and that is the trade this build makes. When the 5600X is no longer enough, the board and memory go with it.

What this build does not include

An operating system

Windows is not in the $954.15. Budget for it separately or install a free alternative.

Peripherals

A CPU cooler

Not needed. The Ryzen 5 5600X includes one, which is one of the reasons this platform stretches a tight budget.
